Microfinance Banks Begs AbdulRasaq To Halt Workers’ Migration To Commercial Banks

Microfinance Banks in Kwara state have appealed to the state  governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq to halt the plan migration of the accounts of the state civil service, pensioners and local government to commercial banks.
They said the government decision will have negative impacts on  the financial inclusion policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Addressing a press conference held at the Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the state under the aegis of National Association of Microfinance Banks (NAMB) state chapter, its chairman, Alhaji Ahmad Baba Suleiman, debunked insinuations that most customers banking with microfinance banks in the state do not have BVN
It also cried out that some of the 13,438 civil servants and pensioners banking with 15 microfinance banks across the state were indebted to the banks to the tune of one billion naira.
“We were really shocked when we had about plans through an announcement of the present administration that civil servants in the state, pensioners and other categories of workers under the payroll of the state government should sized to bank with microfinance banks in the state”, he said.
Ahmad, while appealing to the state government to rescind the decision, asked the government to give a three months grace from March 2020, to the affected microfinance banks to complete an ongoing process which will enable the government monitor payment and “eliminate ghost workers syndrome”.
“Permit me to explain categorically microfinance banks in the state contrary to the belief in some quarters that all their customers have no Bank Verification Number BVN is untrue. Directly related to the the BVN is generation of number which are generated as new accounts are opened.
“All old account in microfinance are also converted to number. The use of this number allows all the accounts owned in other banks by customer to be visible when the BVN of such customer is used “.
